This is the easiest quilt in the world. No joke, anyone can do it, even if you have no clue what you are doing. We are going to walk you through step by step and within two hours you should have a quilt top done, that is to say if you don’t know what you are doing. If you do you should be done in about an hour. This quilt is so easy my 6 year old son helped me and if I had the patience I bet he could have made it himself. This quilt is literally that easy. If you have never made a quilt before then now is the time to start because with our simple directions you will have your first quilt. For the past few years everything has been solids so I figured what is easier that pulling two fabulous colors together – Black and White?
Want to purchase this item? Go HERE to have the supplies you need already done for you!!! Could this get any easier?
Materials
*Makes a 40.5″ x 49.5″ finished quilt using a 1/4″ inch seam
Quilt Top
Binding
– 1/2″ Yard coordinating fabric for binding (this should be more than enough)
I used
Remix by Robert Kaufman.
Backing
How to Cut your Fabrics:
Cut 6 – 5″ x 44″ strips of background fabric (I used white)
Cut 5 – 5″ x 44″ strips of main fabric (I used black)
For your background fabric (the white in my quilt) cut:
12 – 5″ x 5″ white squares
12 – 5″ x 9.5″ white rectangles
7 – 5″ x 14″ white rectangles
For the main fabric (the black in my quilt) cut:
18 – 5″ x 5″ black squares
8 – 5″ x 14″ black rectangles
Now to piece 3 of the world’s easiest blocks:
You will only need to make three different blocks that will look like below. After you have made them you will sew them together and, BAM! you are done. It is that easy. I told you it was the worlds easiest quilt. So lets start sewing.
Once you are all said and done you will have:
6 strips that look like A
3 strips that look like B
2 strips that look like C
To make A:
Sew 1 white 5″ x 5″ square to 1 black 5″ x 5″ square. Then sew that to one 5″ x 9.5″ white rectangle. Sew that to a 5″ x 5″ black square, a 5″x 9.5″ white rectangle, a 5″ black square and a 5″ white square. You are done, now do that 6 times.
To make B:
Sew 1 black 5″ x 14″ black rectangle to a 5″ x 14″ white rectangle. Then sew those to a 5″ x 14″ black triangle and you are done. Do this 3 times.
To make C:
Sew exact opposite from strip B. It will just be white to black to white. Do this 2 times.
Time to Press, Press, Press!
*I made my first quilt about 6 years ago and my sweet mother in law was there to help me along the way and she still is. The very first thing she told me was Press, Press, Press. I thought, how critical could this possibly be? After making a lot of quilts I am learning a valuable lesson after each one, it is that critical. Press, Press, PRESS! I cannot stress this enough. This will help determine how well everything lines up and will help determine if you will have a plus quilt or a not so plus quilt. Press people.*
Once you have finished pressing you will line up your strips just like sew (pun intended!)

*I laid mine on the ground not sewn together to show what the final product would look like sewn together.*
So in my eyes this is the trickiest part of the entire thing. If you are brand new to quilting I would suggest getting some pins and pin your strips together so that you edges meet up. What I mean by this is you will want to pin A to B to make sure you actually have a plus before you start sewing. When I made my first quilt a just started sewing away and before I knew it NOTHING was lining up. It was a mess. My mother in law showed me how to pin. As long as you pin before hand it will help everything to line up in the end. As you are sewing you will see if you need to add more slack to help in line up like you want. It still might not be perfect like you want (mine never is), however, I promise it will look a lot better in the end.
After you have sewn A to B sew B to anther A and pin again. You will want to make sure that once again it all lines up or you will not have a plus when it is all said and done.
Now line up A with C and C with….. and I am sure you can see where the rest of this is going.
Hopefully you are now done and I did a good enough job of explaining this to you. If not then I guess you are a lost cause. Just kidding. Keep trying and don’t get too frustrated. This might seem hard but if you do think this is, then in a few years when you are a master you will look back and this and say to yourself, that was SOOOOOO easy!
So that is it. You are done! Now you get to quilt and bind the sucker. You can can now say you made your first plus quilt and maybe your first quilt. I hope you enjoyed making this. I made this adorable quilt for my youngest daugther, Madison.

Hi, I really want to make this quilt in a throw size. Do you have any suggestions for making it a little bigger without just putting a border around it?

would batting be silly to add for something like this? I don’t make quilts often.
January 25, 2016 at 2:17 pm
We used batting in between the quilt top and the backing! 🙂

Just wondering if this quilt needs 7- 5×14″ strips not 5 as noted in the instructions. That wld mean more than the 5- 5″ strips of the white are required, or have miscalculated?
December 11, 2014 at 2:19 am
I will have to take a look at that. We have actually had tons of people make this quilt already and no one has said anything! Thanks for letting us know.
