The Kate Quilt Tutorial
We took a modern twist on the classic Churn Block mixed with a nine patch and created the darling Kate Quilt.
And now you can make your own, too!
Read all instructions before starting!
Supplies Needed:
20 – 2.5 x 44 in strips {or 1 jelly roll, I used Lazy Day by Lori Whitlock for Riley Blake}
1 1/4 yds white
Step 1.
Separate your 20 strips into pairs of your choice so you have 10 pairs
Sew each pair together to make 10 strips that are now 4.5 X 44 inches long.
Step 2.
Cutting your Fabric
*TIP* these cuts are so close in size; I suggest labeling them into piles with the correct dimensions so you are taking from the correct pile.
You will need two sets of squares from your WHITE fabric
– 60 – 4 x 4 squares {Pile A}
– 20 – 4.5 x 4.5 squares {Pile B}
You will need two sets of squares from your STRIPS*
– 8 – 4 x 4 squares from each of your 10 strips for a total of 80 squares {Pile A}
o Note: This cut requires you to trim the strip down to be 4” rather than the 4.5” that you start with. Just trim ¼ inch of each side to make the seam still run down the middle of your squares
– 2 – 4.5 x 4.5 squares from each of your 10 strips for a total of 20 squares {Pile B}
*After I began, I found it easiest to cut the 2 – 4.5 x 4.5 squares from each of the 10 strips, then trim the rest of the strip ¼” on each of the long sides, then cut my 8- 4 x 4 squares to finish out the strip.*
Now, putting together the Blocks. Each Block will measure 10.5 finished.
Step 3.
Block A
You will need:
– 2 –4.5 x 4.5 white squares
– 2 – 4.5 x 4.5 squares from a strip pile
– 1 – 4 x 4 white square
– 4 – 4 x 4 strip squares
To assemble, Take a white 4.5 square and match it right sides together with a 4.5 strip square. Make 2 HST by drawing a line from one upper corner diagonally to a lower corner and sew ¼ ‘ on each side of that line. Then cut on the line you drew. You have now created 2 HST.
Do this with the other 4.5 squares.
Then place the squares like the picture above.
Now, I didn’t think it mattered which HST I put in which corner, but I was wrong 🙂
So lay out each square before sewing to double check
Repeat step 3 to make 10 blocks {one from each of your original strips}
Step 4.
Block B
You will need:
– 5– 4 x 4 white square
– 4 – 4 x 4 strip squares
Place the squares like the picture above.
Step 5.
Alternate Block A and Block B. It makes 4 across and 5 down.
Step 6.
Quilt and bind and finish!
Yields: one 42 x 52.5 toddler quilt*
I think Kate likes it.
